Bath’s shopping scene is one of its most underrated attractions, offering a genuine mix of historic covered markets, independent boutiques and Georgian shopping arcades. Unlike many city centres, Bath has largely retained its character, making it one of the best places in the UK to shop local.
Bath Guildhall Market
Start at Bath Guildhall Market, just a short walk from Bath Abbey. With more than 800 years of trading history, this historic covered market is home to around 20 independent traders selling everything from artisan cheese and deli produce to jewellery, haberdashery and gifts. There are also a couple of cafés, making it an ideal stop whatever the weather. The market is open Monday to Saturday and closed on Sundays.
Walcot Artisan Quarter
Centred around Walcot Street and London Road, the Walcot Artisan Quarter has been Bath’s creative hub since the 1960s. Browse vintage clothing, independent galleries, designer homeware shops and specialist retailers before exploring the popular Saturday flea market, where you’ll find antiques, books, second-hand clothing and collectables. The Fine Cheese Co. and Bath Aqua Glass are both well worth visiting while you’re here.
Milsom Street
Milsom Street is Bath’s premier shopping destination, combining elegant Georgian architecture with a mix of well-known brands and independent retailers. Rossiters of Bath, a long-established family department store, is a favourite for unique gifts and home accessories, while Jolly’s remains one of Europe’s oldest department stores.
The Corridor
Built in 1825, The Corridor is recognised as one of the world’s earliest shopping arcades. Away from the busier streets, it’s home to a collection of independent boutiques, specialist shops and welcoming cafés, making it a pleasant place to browse at a slower pace.
Bartlett Street Quarter
Bartlett Street Quarter offers another excellent shopping area, centred around the popular Bartlett Street Antique Centre. Alongside antiques, you’ll find independent boutiques, coffee shops and local businesses that are perfect for an afternoon wander.
Bath’s Markets
Bath hosts several excellent markets throughout the year. The Bath Artisan Market takes place monthly in Queen Square, showcasing handmade jewellery, ceramics, artwork and locally produced food. Green Park Station, a beautifully restored Victorian railway station, hosts a Saturday farmers’ market as well as the monthly Bath Vintage and Antiques Market beneath its impressive glass roof.
The Bath Independent Market, held on selected dates at New Oriel Hall in Larkhall, brings together local designers, makers, food vendors and live music. Entry is free, making it a great addition to any visit.
Shopping During the Bath Christmas Market
If you’re visiting during the festive season, many of Bath’s independent markets host special Christmas editions alongside the famous Bath Christmas Market. For dates, opening times and tips on planning your visit, see our Bath Christmas Market 2026 guide.
