The short answer is yes. For many visitors, winter is the best time to experience Bath. The summer crowds have gone, the city’s Georgian architecture looks stunning beneath crisp winter skies, and from late November, the Christmas Market transforms the city into one of England’s most atmospheric festive destinations.
Bath Christmas Market
Bath Christmas Market 2026 runs from Thursday 26 November to Sunday 13 December. More than 200 chalets line the streets around Bath Abbey and the Roman Baths, with around 80% of stallholders coming from the South West. Entry is free. In 2025, the market attracted an estimated 444,000 visitors and generated approximately £60.4 million for businesses across the city.
For a quieter experience, visit on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning between 10am and 12pm. Evenings and weekends are the busiest times but also offer the most festive atmosphere.
Bath on Ice
Bath on Ice runs from 14 November 2026 until 4 January 2027 at Royal Victoria Park. Visitors can enjoy outdoor skating sessions daily from 10:30am to 9:30pm, along with attractions including the Christmas Tree Maze, Glow Golf and the Moguls Alpine Bar. Tickets start from £13.50 for children and £16 for adults.
Year-Round Attractions
The Roman Baths, Thermae Bath Spa, Bath Abbey, the Theatre Royal, the Fashion Museum and the Jane Austen Centre are all open throughout the year. Winter is an excellent time to visit the Roman Baths, as the attraction is generally quieter than during the summer months. Please note that the Roman Baths are closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
The Theatre Royal also has an excellent winter programme. In 2026, productions include Death on the Nile (21 to 25 October), The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (24 to 28 November), Beauty and the Beast pantomime (from 10 December) and A Christmas Carol (14 to 18 December). Booking well in advance is recommended for festive performances.
Thermae Bath Spa in Winter
Winter is arguably the best season to experience Thermae Bath Spa. Relaxing in the open-air rooftop pool, heated to 35.5°C, while surrounded by crisp winter air is one of Bath’s most memorable experiences. On colder days, the warm water creates clouds of steam that drift across the city’s skyline. The spa remains open throughout the year, closing only on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
